Incorporate “something old, something new…” into your wedding

October 31, 2016

Although modern weddings do not have to follow traditions, the truth is that there are certain customs everyone is still very much in love with – and the “something old, something new…” one is definitely popular even today, in 2016.

What is the symbolism behind this tradition, though? How to incorporate  something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue in your wedding? We have some ideas for you – so read on and find out more.

  • Something old – this part of the tradition symbolizes the bride’s history and the fact that she’s taking a small part of it as she steps into a whole new era in her life – that of starting a new family. The most popular “something old” items include family heirlooms – and they can also play the role of “something  borrowed” too, if they are returned after the wedding.

  • Something new – this part stands for what the bride will gain through getting married. Considering that the dress is frequently seen as the most valuable “something new” item, many ladies keep this for their own daughters or young relatives, so that they can use them on their wedding day.

  • Something borrowed – this part represents the “happiness” you borrow from another married lady. It may be something that’s also “something old”, or it may be something entirely different – but what is most important is that you actually return the item after the wedding, so that you have good luck in your life as a married woman.

  • Something blue – this part represents the purity and loyalty of the bride (and the idea that blue stands for these values goes as far back as Ancient Roman times). This is probably the most creative part of the entire tradition, as it can be almost anything you want – from the bouquet wrap to the nail polish and from the wedding ring to the dress itself.
